I have Painted many dogs for my "all dogs go to heaven" series so I decided cats have to have their turn.

I wanted to post this color chart so you can see how I compare the various watercolor brands. Each circle has a light, medium and dark portion so the three main values can also be compared. Thats my cat Chubbs on my flat file. She's my Studio kitty.

This cat seems to be saying ” let me take a better look” or maybe its the lady bug who’s doing the talking.
I have a black and white cat and she’s not only very cute, but does a lot of funny things. She has a smudge right on the tip of one side of her nose and sometimes she can look rather comical just sitting there. She only weighs nine pounds but her name is Chubbs. It’s the really long hair that makes her look so big. I had planned to paint something else but like many days this is just what wanted to be painted. I was drawing and there it was… the first few lines looked like a cat and I went with it. In fact sometimes just a line or a curve of a line will look like something to me and whatever it was I was planning to draw is thrown out for the object which I see in that line and is appearing before me.

This video is almost ten minutes long. It isn’t sped up and is painted in “real time” It shows the wet into wet techinique needed for fur. This is where you wet the paper first then apply the color leting it float onto the paper, guiding it to create form.

You don’t have to use a chinese paint brush you can use a number 6 up to a # 9 round and get the same effects. Rice paper is used here but regular watercolor paper also works great, use a bit more water with watercolor paper. Isn’t it great… how the artist gives the cat an asian look with the eyes. The slant is exxagerated, you can do this or put them in straight across rather than angleing them up at the edges. If you want a more “fat” western like cat you just think about the body like a bowling pin and that is the shape you need.
