"She Soars"

Barbara Hakenberry passed away recently and as one of my collectors and email friends, she will be missed. Not only by the Daily painter"s artists but by so many folks. I met Barbara when she bid on some of my paintings on Ebay and I realized very quickly she was a savvy ebay buyer. Even though she balked at the higher prices, I asked her to switch over to the daily painter's group and check out my work and the work of other artists because I felt the quality of the Art was better. ( also I wouldn't have to pay the ebay fees) She became an instant friend to many of the Artists emailing me and others often. Sometimes it was a joke or a video she thought I would like but at other times we would get into heated discussions about life and societies issues. We talked about everything and because we both has some similar beliefs about religion and death, I think many of my religious paintings struck a cord with her. She was an Art lover that bought paintings purely for the fact that they moved her. It was obvious, she really felt the paintings more than anything. I used to say she was like a Chcolate creme, hard and solid on the outside with a soft center. After seeing a new painting and before hearing what I had to say about it, or why I painted it, she would type a long explanation and emai it to me about her reaction to what she saw or felt from the piece. I always found her insite to be really interesting. More than once her influence would show up in my future paintings. She like realism and many of my works were abstract and I could see as time went by she began to appreciate some of the abstracts more and more. We also had our tiffs, she had a very strong and determined personality and didn't bother to beat around the bush, she wasn't the type to mence words. I have several friends like this and I'm not bothered by some of the blunt ways she would let me know I didn't particularly get a painting just right. We always worked it out and even though she didn't like the prices of some of the more expensive paintings, if she liked it she'd buy it. I of course always lowered my price for her as I do with collectors and friends. She would get particulary mad if she wanted a painting but didn't buy it in time and someone else bought it. So if I thought she would like it, I would send her an email. I also think she bought some paintings just to help me out financially. This was the kind of person she was, I'm sure she did the same with other artists. I would go to her ebay account and sometimes I would be shocked to see how many paintings she would buy in just one day. If someone had the room her paintings would make a great investment.

About my tribute painting... I really struggled as to what to paint and as late as 3am I still hadn't painted my painted for today. For some reason I have seen myself ( in dreams) as a bird flying over the landscape looking down on the earth. I've often wondered If I have a bird spirit which is watching over me and perhaps because of this belief I seem to notice birds following me. Flying from tree to tree as I walk thru the wooods. I wonder if in a past life if I were a bird and if so perhaps I will one day fly again. Since Barbara was in pain in many ways, I hope now her spirit is soring over the ocean flying ever higher and her soul is at peace.

Grandmother's Visit

I sold this painting today and thought I should at least post it because I realized the client is coming tomorrow to pick it up and I hadn’t even taken a photo yet. I really didn’t have time to take a decent photo and you can see that there is a big flash right in the middle of the sky. Oh well, you get the idea and this photo at least give me a record of the painting.
I used to paint light houses all the time because I used to get a lot of requests for them. Not so much any more. Now folks just like water paintings of the waves on the beach or breaking on the rocks. Its more of a mininamalist trend.

Lavender Skies

This little 3 by 5 card is $15.00 and is a bit out of focus... I'm sorry for the bad photo I'm a bit tired its a Watercolor on Paper.

I was pretty busy running around today and getting a new Refrigerator for our Condo's pool house. Whew! It's in and ready to go for labor day. Of course we will be bar- B-queuing and I thought it was needed to keep all the food cool since its been about 90 degrees. Our old refrigerator wasn't cooling the food and was running 24/7, so it had to go.

We had to take off the gate at the pool house because it was too big! AGHHH... as things would go, everything kinda went wrong, they were moving it and dropped it! It was a comedy of errors. When they dropped it I thought someone got hurt since the guy holding it on the hand truck tripped. He went flying off one way and the fridge went another. Oh well it now has a bump on one side. No worries, its going to be sitting outside all winter, in fact its best if it isn't too nice. Then when we opened it (it was used) it had old moldy food in it... Uggh!! So it took another two hours to clean it up. I'm glad that's over.

Red buds

Are you getting tired of tulips, I've had a bit of a sinus problem this week so I've haven't painted as much as I usually do.

Barb's tulips

Ok let’s see if this is the one, I made sure to measure the painted portion of the piece so that it would end up being 8 by 10. The actual painting is larger but since its just white, the buyer has the option of framing it small or bigger.
This painting is a bit more whimsical. It appears to me that the one tulip in the middle is being held on to by the two smaller tulips.
I guess I’ll hit the hay… its 1:57 am and I have to take the dogs to get their teeth cleaned at 7:00 am.

Dolphin Daze

I used to teach watercolor classes and Dolphins were a favorite subject of my students. Dolphins always seem so happy. They convey a sweetness and a wonderful spark of energy which is genuinely curious.
Next month I'm going to be doing a series of paintings which are related to the Earth and specifically water. Be prepared to see some lake paintings because Lake Wylie is a great subject but I may do some under water paintings too. I've been working them up in my mind. Usually I'll walk the dogs several times per day and while on these walks I allow my mind to develop paintings. I see mist rolling across the water in the early morning light with fishermen standing in their Bass boats, also another painting of White Egrets and Heron standing at the waters edge or just taking off from the water. Of course my beloved Koi looking up thru the water to the surface, and then there is always colorful sailboats and wonderful sunsets. I look forward to my month of water paintings, and I hope this month of painting water will remind you how precious each drop of rain and every inch of water is to us and our planet.

My little Aquarium

My husband bought me this little present and one of the fish had babies this week, Their (platies) getting bigger pretty fast. This Aquarium is 24 gallons and its stocked with tropical fish. I'm taking the day off from painting today. I framed my large painting which I just finished and that took most of my painting time. Yesterday I painted a little Koi and when I looked at it this morning I decided he looked like he had a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. So I took that out then of course I darkened the water and basically painted him again. I'll post his new image tomorrow.

Flowing Waters

This is a small Koi Painting that I did today and I tried to make it look like the water was flowing all around and over the fish.  At first I detailed the koi and water a bit to much so I pulled back the color and softened the lines and now I like it much better.

This painting is part of my “all dogs go to heaven ” series… it seems very popular and I’ll always have fun with it. My explanation for this painting is pretty straight forward… I see this little guy from the wrong side of the tracks bringing his goofy sidekick along with him as he looks in at the pretty little poodles on their cushy red sofa.

This has been sealed and it may be framed without glass. It would also look great framed with a mat and under glass .

Palm Reader by Amy Kelm

I have posted here today another of Amy's paintings. This was part of her thesis and is watercolor on paper. It about 1/2 sheet of watercolor paper. I don't have the size actually but it is a larger piece.
