This series seems to never end. I was planning to paint a red sunset over the lake. I’ve been doing a lot of blue water paintings and thought it would be nice to go to the red side of the color wheel.

After I got the yellow, red and gold on the panel one stroke led to another and all I could do was paint this painting. It took me about a minute to see the sunset wasn’t in the plans for the daily painting. If your new to this series it’s about customs and how we celebrate life’s events and the passing of time with rituals.

Ancient Ritual 126

This is also part of any ancient ritual series. It explores the ways in which we mark the passing of time and events in our lives with ritual.

I love these colors. and may do a pond scene with them.    I was pretty sleepy last night and I went to bed and didn't post this painting.  It rained here in Lake Wylie and this morning every thing is wet and beautiful.  South Carolina is really green this time of year and if you ever get the chance you should come here in spring. Its nothing short of vibrant!

I closed down my ebay store today, its too difficult to be selling in so many places. You end of spending too much time on the computer. I want to paint not sit around writing copy and uploading photos. I’ll open it during the Winter months when things are slower.

Tonight I'm starting to paint my 33 by 33 inch Koi painting. So I may or may not post tomorrow. All week I have been drawing value studies to determine the placement of the fish and the funny thing about this is...... that I may not use any of them once I begin. I have been thinking about the family, the kids and the parents and how they interact. I 'm hoping I can put something of them into the piece.

four inches by four inches mixed media piece & companion piece to the collage I put up earlier this week. I made the paper, painted it with watercolor, gesso and acrylic, then covered it with varnish. The reds and the tans are beautiful together. It looks great!

a painting a day, lesson in abstract expressionism

This is mixed media (11″ by 11″) on illustration board. $50.00

I guess this piece would fall into the category of abstract expressionism. Its more about how I felt at the time I created the piece then what the piece actually looks like. I started out with a collage of handmade papers I made, then I used some gesso and allowed it to dry, then I painted a full watercolor over this entire piece, then used acrylics to paint over some of the areas. It has texture and some really wonderful passages. Its difficult to photograph because it has a semi gloss fixative which reflects back light into the camera lens.

I made all this paper and then cut or tore it according to how I wanted it to look. I love the look of watercolor paints on tissue paper. It almost looks like stained glass. After I glued it all down and used a brayer to get it even, I spayed it with mat fixative so it will have consistent appearance.
I'm not sure what I'll call it. I have a great list of potential names for paintings somewhere. A while back I accumulated about 20 great titles, but now I need to go dig them out.

This is 11 by 11 inches and is mounted on Archival Mat board. All paints and papers are archival and 100% hand made. This would look great in a modern setting but could look nice in a traditional decor as well. This is for sale for $99.00, This took more than a day... more like two days but since I painted a bunch of ACEOs in between, I figure it still counts. The prep work took a long time and that doesn't really count.

Sunflower Suprise Watercolor ACEO

Since my watercolor class is painting ACEO's tomorrow I thought it would be fun to paint one to see how long it took and I needed one to show with the wet into wet technique.
Since I painted it wet into wet, I wasn't sure how much of it would stay and how much would melt into the other shapes. I had to keep pulling the blue out of the yellow where the two color collided it became green!

Abstract- Ancient Ritual 05 ACEO

This is another ACEO in my Ancient Ritual Series. I painted it today at our Art league. I have been developing a stamp for the backs of these cards, I have a few ideas, I just haven't decided what it will be exactly. Right now I just paint or do a small drawing on the backs.

Windy day a semi abstract in brown

For my painting a day, I try to paint a variety of things. I have recently painted three small artists trading cards and also some florals which I haven’t done lately. In keeping with this need for variety I decided to paint an abstract. Of course this coincided with a query. I was asked by one of my collectors to use more brown. That made me laugh because I’m sure she meant well with that comment but I will tell you, customers are very hard to please. Most of the time I don’t usually try because the work suffers.
I had this little ampersand 5 by 7 panel and decided to see if I could paint an abstract with some browns. After only a minute or two I could see it wasn’t as abstract as I had planned but I went with it. I could see flags and trees blowing in the wind, then I saw what appeared to be a reflection in the bottom portion so I allowed that to stay, and painted some more reflective type shapes. When its all said and done I think it looks like a city street that just had a bit of rain, the wind is still blowing pretty hard and everything is shimmery.
So here is my painting with a bit of brown. Speaking of brown….I don’t know if this is happening in your part of the world but everyone here is painting their interior walls a color of brown that is somewhere between cafe latte and beige. My guess is: this is why there was request for more browns in my paintings.
Folks you don’t have to match your walls to your paintings. Be brave buy something YOU like, not something your decorator likes.Art is supposed to touch you personally, if you’e just looking for coordinating decor, you are missing out on so many wonderful paintings.
Artist’s TIP: if you want to paint watercolor on this ground you will have to use the watercolor almost full strength out of the tube as the surface is very slick.Also you will have to seal it with a spray varnish. I think its made for oils or acrylics but I’ll try watercolor on anything.
