Ancient Ritual ( number 9)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I painted this abstract on Gessoed paper to get a bit more texture. I love the colors and the feel of Gesso and think its a good fit with Watercolor.
This piece can be framed under glass or as it. If you would like to buy it, tell me how you plan to frame it and I will prepare the surface accordingly. The size is 12 by 14 . Price is $99.00

This is one painting in the Ancient Ritual Series where I am exploring the idea of the passage of time and the way humans have a need to commemorate events thru rituals.

If you are interested in the “Hows” of painting watercolor on Gesso, please email me shantmarie@aol.com and I can answer any questions you may have.

Ritual 08 Watercolor ACEO

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This is the 8Th painting in the Ancient Ritual series.
This is an Artist collector's card. The size is 2.5 by 3.5 and is for sale for $10.00 plus 1.00 S&H.

I have been working on my Jay painting, I can't decide to paint his face in detail or leave one side as a blurr... both appeal to me, so I'm painting it in detail and if I don't like it I can always blurr it later. When I get it done I'll post it on my weekly painting blog which is located at http://h20color.wordpress.com

It may be done this week. I am also painting a little fox painting which I have to make some decisions about.

Sunflower Suprise Watercolor ACEO

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Since my watercolor class is painting ACEO's tomorrow I thought it would be fun to paint one to see how long it took and I needed one to show with the wet into wet technique.
Since I painted it wet into wet, I wasn't sure how much of it would stay and how much would melt into the other shapes. I had to keep pulling the blue out of the yellow where the two color collided it became green!
I love the look and this is for sale for $10.00

Marbles

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I was trying to think of a way to put some perspective in this painting but didn't want to mess with the design of the marbles. I don't think kids play with Marbles any more but we used to collect them and trade them. Everyone had their favorite. We would draw a big circle in the dirt and every one would get down on their knees around the circle and try to get all the good ones. This is 9.5 by 14 but it could be cropped as a square piece. Come to think of it, it could be hung in any direction.

I guess my brain is trying to say "take off a day"...

Hope you're having good weather in your part of the world it about 75 degree F here and beautiful.

He's a handful... Baby Raccoon

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Here is a picture of a baby raccoon we found this week. I have raised a raccoon before and I knew that this one was in a bit of trouble, its mom must have been killed because she would not have left him to fend for himself. It appeared that he was on his own for a few days. He was badly dehydrated and already covered in ticks. I figured he was about four weeks old. I gave him some kitten's replacement milk, cleaned him up and took him in to a raccoon rehabilitation expert. She'll feed him with a bottle till he's old enough to eat dog food, then she'll take him and all the others that she has within the same age group and train them to live in the wild. Thats a whole story in itself.... At about 16 weeks they will be ready to go on their own,. She has 900 acres, where she sets them free. The last time I raised a racoon it was so much work, I knew I couldn't do it this time. I was pretty exhusted when the raccoon expert took over at about 12 weeks. Since this little guy was having some problems I also knew she would have to give it some shots. I hope he makes it!
I've painted many paintings of raccons which I find interesting animals. They have very stiff fur unlike a cats or a dog. Also they all look different. I always thought they were identical but when you see all of the babies together you realize they are not all the same. Some have brown fur some have more of a sable color and some like this one are almost gray. They all have the bandit face but some have a very pointed nose and others have a rounded nose.

They are all very cute but your very glad to see them on their own.

Baby Raccoon cries out for help

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
This is how he looked when I found him, he can barely walk, in fact more like crawl, but he's a survivor. He must of crawled a long ways cause we couln't find a nest nearby or hear any of the other babies. I'm shooting this photo straight down from my height which is 5'2" and he is very small just a ball of fluff.
I cropped the pohto a bit so you could see him better. I think he is actually falling over at the moment that I snapped this photo, he was pretty weak.

"Woods" a painting a day, by Shanti Marie

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This small painting was painted today at the Tega Cay Art League at our weekly "painting Tuesday"s

Some of the members get together each Tuesday to paint and talk. We are all doing something different and our styles are all very individual. It makes it fun, just to share and watch other people paint, their choices and their approach. I decided to try a few bright colors here in the rocks, I like to paint rocks with different colors just to see what works. Some folks like them, others would rather have them realistically painted. Either way, I love the texture. I may be doing a few rock paintings this week as it is one of the techniques I teach.
The size is 6 inches by 8 inches. This is for sale for $35.00

Blue Ridge Mountain Mist

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This painting was inspired by my trip to Wild Acres. The place is rather Mystical and it has left foot prints upon my soul. You have to visit the place to understand it.

I have been working on a larger paintings and will post them on my other blog a painting a week, feel free to check it out. http://h20color.worpress.com/ I will post one later tonight. Yes, its another Koi, Its hard for me not to paint them, I keep getting different things I want to try and people keep buying them. I wanted to have a Koi show with at least six big pieces. I only have four so far. The last really nice one I painted, I had to mark as "not for sale" so I can start to accumulate a few more.

You can choose to frame it like an oil painting or in the traditional manner of watercolor.

High mountain Abstract

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I started this painting with one thought in mind, it would be an abstract, I put down some masking and then the next thing you know it looked like snow covered mountains. Before I knew what was happening a mountain landscape began to appear before my eyes. So Then I figure, go ahead, put in some bright pink on the top and maybe something that looks like trees and its done...

I love these paintings, they are loose and free and the color combinations are always surprising.

Carolina Sunset

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
11 by 15 100.00 watercolor on paper shantmarie@aol.com

Here is how you paint this painting.1. You paint the orange yellow color starting from the top all the way down the page going back and forth with your paint brush. Starting the stroke off from the side of the paper to the other side without stopping. This way you will not get brush marks. Then blot any paint that may be on your tape, you do not want this color to seep back onto you paper.
Now take a clean bush which you have squeeze all the water out of with a paper towel and pull out some high lights for the water this should be below the area you have chosen for your horizon line… Then also pull out a sun shape on the upper 2/3s of the paper. Let dryNow mix up some dark paint or use Payne’s gray and paint in a horizon line by painting some shapes straight across paint them by pulling these shapes up from the horizon line. If you want, you can draw the line in with a ruler because it has to be perfectly straight. I think my picture is a little crooked but it really is straight. Then paint the same shapes below the line to match the shapes above. If your paper is no longer wet you will need to soften the edges. Take a damp brush and soften any edges of these shapes .( definition of damp brush :A damp brush is one that has been dipped into water to clean it and then using a paper towel, pull out all the water in the brush)
Now paint the clouds with the Payne’s grey color or whatever dark you have chosen. As you paint in this color you will need to soften the edges with a damp brush and also take this clean damp brush and pull out some white clouds under the darker clouds. You will need to (each time)clean off your brush by pulling the color off of it onto a paper towel so you don’t deposit color where you just picked it up.
Now paint in the lower trees using a very dark Payne’s grey leaving some peek holes so the water will show thru. You will soften these trees edges as you did the other things and also put some of the yellow orange color into some of the Payne’s grey color in the center area so that the trees in the center are lighter . Let the trees on the edges be darker.
That’s pretty much it… You have to do this painting project quickly to avoid overworking it.
If you try this and have any questions just email me and I will be happy to help you with it.

Mountain Birch

Today was a long day filled with lots of painting and good conversation with many fine people. Artists are always interesting and of course I actually fit in with this group of ceatives. I'm not getting much rest waking up at 7 am and going to bed after midnight. These daily paintings are getting painted as usual but I'm spending most of the day painting my Jay painting and my extra large Koi painting which is 3 feet by 4 feet. This painting was inspired by the beautiful misty feel you see here in the mountains.

The size is 11 by 7.5 price is 40.00
